Bali holds ASEAN Blogger Conference to promote ASEAN Community via social media

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Blogger Conference kicked off here Wednesday with the theme of "The New ASEAN and its Cooperation with Dialogue Partners".

The conference, officially opened by Indonesian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mr. Tifatul Sembiring, was attended by 200 representatives from 10 ASEAN member states.

"ASEAN Blogger Conference 2011 is expected to bring ASEAN closer to the community and to be a forum for brainstorming ideas about the implementation of the ASEAN Charter towards the establishment of ASEAN Community 2015," Mr. Tifatul Sembiring said Wednesday.

ASEAN Blogger Community (ABC) was initiated by the bloggers from various cities in Indonesia. The bloggers want ASEAN to be not only a forum for the elitists, diplomats and governments, but also as a forum of connection and communication between peoples.

Mr. Iman Brotoseno, the ABC president, said ASEAN's first Blogger Conference has discussed the development of online social media utilization in member countries and the steps can be done by ASEAN bloggers in supporting ASEAN Community by 2015 through active roles in their respective countries.

The conference will last until Thursday as a part of back-to- back ASEAN meetings in Nusa Dua Bali, Indonesia.
