Indonesia on Thursday stressed the importance of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) as the implementing agency of the 4th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) in organizing and contributing to various regional and international activities.
"For instance, over the past year, Election Visit Programs have been organized in Japan as well as in Thailand. In this opportunity, we wish to convey our heartfelt appreciation to the governments of both countries for their kind cooperation and collaboration, so that these programs have been well implemented," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa in his welcoming remarks at the forum.
He added that the IPD has been arranging lectures and academic discourses in cooperation with universities both within Asia and in other regions on the promotion of democracy.
"And even more, the IPD has made concrete contribution in responding to the growing tide of democracy that swept across much of the Middle East and North Africa. In this connection, the IPD has, for example, initiated a series of workshops in cooperation with various stakeholders in Egypt to share experiences in nurturing and consolidating democracy, he said.
Scheduled on Dec. 8-9, the 4th BDF is attended by some 24 ministers and at least 82 countries.
